Computer monitor

Welcome back!
I want a new monitor for my computer. I guess if I check out tv deals I might find a good bargain.
I don’t know, can you use a regular television as a computer monitor? I have a friend who uses a big flat screen tv as a computer monitor. He of course knows a lot about computers and repairs them and does other things on them.
I don’t want a huge tv, just one that won’t break the table top that I use a a computer station.
