Advertising, or Put-down?

I do not understand the recent wave of advertising that implies that Americans are stupid, or morons.
Tasteless commercials with idiotic people who do not seem to have brains in their heads are an insult to Average American Citizens. Why do ad agencies think that showing morons will get people to buy things? When a company uses moronic ads, I stop buying. PERIOD
If they want people to buy, why do they not treat the customers as if they actually have brains? Yes, I am criticizing the current trend of ads. If the ad is funny, or comical - great. If it is an insult - no sale. It should be simple. It does make me wonder if the ad agencies are the simple ones.
