Good Doctor

Welcome back!

The previous articles where I have talked about my tummy, doctors, and diets reminded me of something that happened back in 2001. No, I am not talking about the space oddessy here.

Back in 2001 I had developed a hernia in my tummy right at the belly button, or as doctors would talk about it near where the umbilical cord had been. It started to push out and was an ugly purple color. Well, when I showed it to my primary care doctor, he immediately called in a surgeon to look at it. The next day, I went in for umbilical hernia surgery. I hadn’t understood that a hernia can become gangrenous. YUK Even the word is ugly. Well, any way after the hernia surgery, I was not supposed to life more than 5 pounds (there went my favorite purse, but that is another story).

Some time passed and one day some suture came out, about 4 inches worth. I was supposed to go in for a check up the next day any way, so when there, I asked my doctor about it. However, I could not recall the technical word for the suture and called it fishing line.

I asked my doctor if I should be concerned about having fishing line coming out of my belly button. He said no, then got a serious look on his face and said welllllll, maybe. He paused, I waited and was wondering if I should worry, then he said - if more fishing line comes out……..(pause) and it has a lure on it, please let me see it. It took a moment for it to sink in what he had said, then I noticed the big grin on his face. He explained that sometimes the body will reject the plastic suture when it isn’t needed any more and not to worry. His joke actually helped to reassure me that everything was okay. Until that moment, I had known that I had a good doctor, I just didn’t realize that he had a sense of humor, too. He is still my doctor and my husband’s doctor and we have since learned that he is well liked by the patients and the staff. I am glad to know he has also shown his sense of humor to others, too. :)
