Re-wiring a table lamp
Welcome back!
A close family friend had an expensive table lamp given to him. The apartment that he lives in does not have ceiling lights. I am truly spoiled. I love the lights that come in ceilings. Never thought about living in a place that didn’t have them.
Any way, he brought it over and also brought over an extension cord . The previous cord that had been on the lamp was not in good shape, so he cut it off to avoid any burning wires. Taking the lamp apart is fairly easy. On the bottom, there is a special set screw that holds the main wiring conduit in place. His lamp has a clear glass body, so the conduit is brass plated and shiny. Undoing the screw let the lamp basically get loose and come slowly apart. All of the different parts need to be carefully reassembled in order to make the lamp properly go back together and work. Threading the wire through the different parts was no problem. The problem was getting all of the parts in their proper order and position. Since I was working with a pre-existing cord, the plug was on it so I couldn’t just shove the wire through from any angle. I ended up connecting and dis-connecting the bulb fixture 4 separate times because I had gotten parts in the wrong order. Oh well, getting the job done right was more important since this is an electrical appliance. Re-wiring a wall outlet is easier believe it or not. Finally got it all together only to find that a part up near the fixture itself was on backwards. This time all I had to do was disconnect the fixture, turn the part around and finish. Put in a bulb, plug in the lamp, and it worked, then the fixture itself decided that it needed to be replaced.
The hard parts were already done, just getting the part for the bulb is easy. My sanity is saved.
